Do I need a broker account to try TraderTape?▾

No. Paper portfolios run any strategy with virtual capital against live market data. You see signals fire, positions open, P&L move — without connecting a broker. When you're ready for real money, connect Kite, Upstox, or Groww.

How is paper trading different from a backtest?▾

A backtest replays history. Paper trading runs forward — the strategy fires on tomorrow's data, which the backtest never saw. Both use the exact same strategy logic and conviction scoring; the only difference is whether real fills happen at a broker or virtual fills happen at the daily close. Paper trading is the best way to validate that a strategy still works on conditions that haven't happened yet.

Which brokers do you support?▾

Zerodha Kite (cloud login or via local agent), Upstox (via local agent), and Groww (via local agent). The agent is a small Python program that runs on your machine and holds your broker credentials locally — they never touch our servers.

Is my data private?▾

Yes. By default, your broker secret never reaches our servers — it stays on the local agent. You can also enable obfuscation, which scales every quantity and amount on your machine before uploading, so the cloud only ever sees scaled-down patterns. Your real position sizes and P&L stay local.

What strategies are included?▾

Five built-in models: V0 Dart Monkey (random baseline), V1 Momentum, V2 Bull Breakout, V3 Dip Buyer, and V4 Alpha Dip. V3 and V4 are calibrated from real trading data and consistently beat the equal-weight NIFTY 100 baseline in backtests. You can fork any of them or build your own from scratch with the visual rule editor.

Will it work on a free Kite plan?▾

Yes — for everything except live tick streaming, which Kite gates behind a paid plan. With a free Kite account you get accurate prices via REST polling (refreshed every 10-15 seconds), and all strategy, backtest, and order placement features work normally. Live ticks are nice but not required.

Where do my orders actually get placed?▾

Through your broker, not through us. We generate signals on the cloud and either: (a) place GTT orders directly to Kite via your authenticated session, or (b) hand the signal to your local agent which places the order locally. Either way, the broker sees orders coming from you — we're just the strategy layer.

How is this different from Streak?▾

Streak is a no-code strategy builder. We're a no-code strategy builder + a backtester that uses historical NSE constituents (no survivorship bias) + realistic slippage modeling + paper trading + multi-broker reconciliation + a Telegram bot for mobile control + a privacy model that keeps your secrets on your machine. The visual editor and built-in models are the surface; the underlying engine is what makes the difference.

Can I export my trades?▾

Yes. Upload your broker tradebook XLSX once, and the analysis pages compute realized P&L, edge, patterns, trends, and benchmarks. Re-upload anytime — duplicates are silently skipped.
